The intense afternoon of fun that follows provides for a humorous, slightly surrealistic yet entirely recognisable experience for young readers. ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Tea’ started off with a minimal text written by Ellen Duthie specifically thought of as a gift for an illustrator, with as much room as possible for the pictures to tell most of the story. The text established the rhythm and narrative arc, and the pictures and details of the story were composed to that rhythm in what was a riveting experience of joint authorship. We were interested in establishing a crescendo of excitement and growth in the relationship between the two new friends, with the promise of a whole different teatime the following day. More! More! From the very title and cover, the reader is invited or challenged to look for clues. ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Tea’, says Peppi in the title and for the first three double spreads, zooming in from a distance, readers will try to guess. Their efforts are rewarded in a busy fourth double spread, where they will eventually find a potential guest. From a visual point of view, I was interested in establishing a rhythm whereby each double spread would activate readers in different ways and would accompany them in their discovery of the characters and their unfolding relationship. Double spreads full of details to pore over alternate with others where the focus is more on the characters and the development of their relationship, creating an enjoyable reading rhythm that parallels the rhythm of play and changes of in relationship between the two characters.
